I read Michael Peissel's book, The Lost World of Quinta Roo in 1980 I was so enthralled I wanted to go there and try to follow his route I was living in Alaska at the time.We flew from Ketchikan to Seattle, Texas, Mexico City, Merida, and a small plane to Cancun. We spent 4 weeks following his route, by bus hitchhiking and staying at small beach resorts with traditional houses with hammocks. It was wonderful. We were in Quintana Roo. I went back 3 times and visited most of the major ruins. Wonderful trip. My son was 12. I never went back after my last visit, too depressing, tourism.
